Summer Enrichment Prog - 2017

The following items are currently offered by Penn-Delco School District.

6TH Grade Transition Camp
> Program designed for students entering grade 6 in September 2017.

This course is designed for all students who want a 'jump start' on the Northley experience. Students will participate in team-building activities and meet other incoming sixth graders from all four elementary schools before the year begins. Master opening a locker, finding your way around, and learn more about what Northley Middle School has to offer. Build confidence in yourself and develop new friendship skills while participating in fun activities!


Duration: 4 Days

Dates: Post-Session: Monday, August 21 - Thursday, August 24, 2017


Time: HALF DAY 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Location: Northley Middle School

Cost: $70.00 plus 3.5 percent processing fee

American Red Cross - BABYSITTER TRAINING
>Program designed for students who will be 11 - 17 years old at the beginning of the class in July 2017.

Students will learn skills and responsibilities relevant to becoming a babysitter. Training includes infant and child supervision, feeding, diapering, staying safe and how to best respond to emergencies. Participants will practice skills that require them to be on the floor, therefore, dress comfortably and appropriately. A babysitter safety kit will be provided. THIS COURSE RUNS ONE EXTENDED DAY.

ANIMATION
> Program designed for students entering grade 4 - 8 in September 2017.

Students will explore the history and methods of animation. By the end of the session, each student will produce a flip book, a hand-drawn cartoon, a stop-motion short, and a Claymation short.

Crash Course in General Science
>Program designed for students entering grade 9 in September 2017.

This course is designed for students who plan to test out of the 9th grade general science course and go right into Biology as a freshman. We will review prior learning and cover major concepts students should know to be successful in biology class.

Creative Writing
>Program designed for students entering grade 4 - 8 in September 2017.

Use your imagination, wits, and insight to hone your writing skills! Students will be encouraged to develop their own personal voice through a variety of writing styles. In previous years, students have written poetry, persuasive non-fiction, and even dramatic scripts.

Experimental Art Making
>Program designed for students entering grade 2 - 6 in September 2017.

Can't get enough art? Want to learn how to make art with all kinds of fun stuff? Students in this session will be exposed to a variety of art-making materials and will be encouraged to explore, experiment, and take risks with their art. We will use traditional art-making materials, such as drawing supplies and paint, as well as non-traditional supplies, such as shaving cream! Several art pieces will be completed by the end of the week and will go home with the artists. If you have always wanted to try something new with your art, then this is the class for you!

How to Write a Children's Book
>Program designed for students entering grades 1 - 5 in September, 2017.

Become an author and publisher! Students will learn to write and illustrate hard cover children's book during this enriching summer workshop. Students will brainstorm ideas and learn the process of publishing a book from idea to finished product. Books will be shared during an author's party on the final day. THIS COURSE RUNS TWO WEEKS.

Intro to Coding (Computer Science)
>Program designed for students entering grade 4 - 8 in September 2017.

Using professional coding software, students will learn how to code and will join the Code Academy to continue free lessons after the workshop is completed. 'In the year 2020, there will be 1.4 million jobs in computer coding, but only 400,000 people with the right skills to fill them.' Students in this workshop will develop a basic understanding of two coding languages, formats, and images.

Students will learn how to write, film and edit their own short videos.

SOUNDS OF SUMMER YOUTH BAND CAMP
> Program designed for instrumental students entering grade 5 - 9 in
September 2017. Students must have at least one year of school band experience.

The course is open to students who have played their instruments for at least one year in school band. Curriculum will include small group instruction and small ensemble performance, as well as a combined band ensemble.

The last evening will be open to all students' family members who have an instrument and wish to sit-in with students.

Ukulele
> Program designed for students entering grades 4 - 8 in September, 2017.

Students will learn the basics of the ukulele. Students do not need any prior musical knowledge to participate. Each student will receive a ukulele to keep!
